Plum Martini, Umi
Where: Umi, 53 Isham Rd West Hartford
Ingredients: Vodka, Choya Plum Wine, Cranberry Juice Cost: $7.50 Yes, there is a piece of fruit in your martini. Yes, the sushi is moving and you just sampled a buffalo chicken sushi roll. Relax - this is all quite normal at Umi in West Hartford - the first sushi joint in Connecticut to offer conveyer belt sushi for those who appreciate novelty and speed in their cuisine. Speaking of novelty - applying plum wine to a martini is pure genius (as well as being pure alcohol, so drink with caution). As an aficionado of plum wine (and weird things), I was very pleased at how well the wine part of this cocktail sang over the vodka and cranberry components, which were merely extras to the main flavor component of the drink (much like the small pots if wasabi and soy sauce that punctuate the plates of sushi on the conveyer belt). The plum at the bottom of the drink was a sweet and whimsical finishing touch to the martini: a very pleasing experience for eyes and mouth alike. -KATHARINE IACOBUCCI |
