Long Wharf Theatre has added another show to its 2013 summer season: a national tour of Smokey Joe’s Café. The show’s made up of songs penned by rock & roll pioneers Jerry Lieber & Mike Stoller. The tunes range from “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock” to “Love Potion #9” and “Poison Ivy” to “Stand by Me” and “On Broadway.” There’s also lots of dancing in this thing.
The show, produced by Supreme Talent Internation, runs on the Long Wharf mainstage July 10-28, with performances Wednesday through Sunday at 8 p.m. and 3 p.m. matinees on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and extra evening shows at 8 p.m. Sunday July 14 and Tuesday July 16. Tickets are $59.
I’ve elaborated a bit on the announcement in my New Haven Theater Jerk blog, here.
The Long Wharf has already hosted one summer-season event, A Couple of Blaguards, while its main subscription season was still ending (with Clybourne Park) last month. This Friday, June 7, Long Wharf’s holding its annual fundraising gala, anchored by Mandy Patinkin performing his one-man show Dress Casual.
