New Haven Free Public Library has the right attitude about Christmas-season capitalist impulses: make merry with them.
The library sent around an email titled “Economic Policy Explored in Films at New Haven Public Library. The missive begins:
“The New Haven Free Public Library invites film lovers to explore two proposals for economic prosperity: trading places or marrying up.”
The films: John Landis’ socioeconomic satire Trading Places, starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, with a Jamie Leigh Curtis nude scene which was dear to many young boys’ hearts back in 1983. It screens Saturday, Dec. 29 at 2:30 p.m.
A month later, on Saturday, Jan. 26 (also 2:30 p.m.), the library (main branch, 133 Elm Street, New Haven, 203-946-8835) shows the Marilyn Monroe/Betty Hutton gold-digging comedy How to Marry a Millionaire (as distinct from all the other Marilyn Monroe/Another Attractive Actress gold-digging comedies such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes , Ladies of the Chorus and Some Like It Hot).
Appreciative of current fiscal-cliff concerns, the film screenings are free.
