Jazz legend Dave Brubeck, perhaps best known for his 1959 album Take Five, which reached the second highest slot on the Billboard Pop Album chart in 1961, died at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Conn., according to the Chicago Tribune. Tomorrow would have been his 92nd birthday.
"Take Five" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk," both from that album, featured the unconventional time signatures that became Brubeck's calling card, and "Three to Get Ready" alternated between 3/4 and 4/4 time. All three tracks, and many other cuts on Brubeck albums, featured the brilliant, cool playing of alto saxophonist Paul Desmond.
