Christine Ohlman, the cool-coiffed “Beehive Queen” whose feminine growl of a blues voice graces the house band at Saturday Night Live and own roots band Rebel Montez, has been ranked #7 on the Alternate Root website’s “Top 30 Female Vocalists—Right Now!”
The list is here.
That’s a high honor, considering that the top 6 consists of Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Carrie Rodriguez, Alison Krauss, Bonnie Raitt and Patty Griffin. The respected site, dedicated to the promotion of American Roots music (with the slogan: “Soundtrack for the cultural Armageddon”) notes that Ohlman “seemingly turns up wherever an amazing blue-eyed soul singer is needed. With her band Rebel Montez she has established herself as one of the great voices in American roots/soul music.”
A Connecticut treasure since her days with The Scratch Band a generation ago, Christine Ohlman (with Rebel Montez) plays Black-Eyed Sally’s (350 Asylum Street, Hartford; 860-278-7427, www.blackeyedsalys.com) on March 30.
