These letters were sent by readers in response to our July 31 article, "Beer Cans Are Making a Comeback."
I'm a big fan of Rob Leonard's local brews from New England Brewing Company, and likewise a big fan of canned beer after years as a bottle snob. It stays fresher longer so it tastes better, and I almost always use a glass so there's no issue on my lips.
It's nice to see the tide turning, because I do hear from my friends in the restaurant business that the cans remain a tough sell among customers. They stock Rob's tasty canned brews, but the bottled craft beers move faster.
I find some of your facts misleading. New micro brews account for a large growth in the glass industry and represent a quality product. Glass is associated with quality and cleanliness.
Making new bottles out of recycled glass uses considerably much less energy than making a new bottle from raw materials.
The tops of beer cans are unsanitary and exposed to any undesirable element. In fact, when opened that undesirable element is pushed into the beer. The surface of a beer bottle when the top is taken off is cleaner than any operating room.
In the future you will see red bottles, black bottles, and even bottles that do not break. People want to be served in glass.
When I go to a bar, or restaurant, if I was served in a can I would question the quality of the establishment. The only place where cans are prevalent is where people lose control and drink excessively. Sporting events and cheap bars.
Plus, a can is lined with a plastic substance that is known to promote cancer, diabetes and obesity.
Don't bash the glass bottle... how uninformed and one sided your article is.
