The Fight Continues Over Bridgeport Aviation Pioneer Gustave Whitehead and His Place in the History Books
The cast of potential characters in a movie about Bridgeport aviation pioneer Gustave Whitehead, who was reported in an August 1901 article in a Bridgeport paper to have flown in a powered aircraft, two years before the Wright brothers flew, gets longer and longer as the years go by. In the early years of the 20th century there would have been Whitehead and the neighborhood boys who ran to his shop whenever one of his engines burst into life, some of whom assisted him and years later gave signed, sworn statements, some saying they had seen Whitehead fly; and the occasional backers who funded his work; and his brother John, who arrived, reportedly flush from the gold fields of California, to help Gustave.
