Crime & Punishment: Linda McMahon Offers to Repay 35-Year Old Debts
Republican Senate candidate Linda McMahon has assailed her opponent, U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy, about his failure to pay rent and mortgage a few years ago, even challenging the Democrat to release documents about his foreclosure scare. Reporters then asked McMahon if she'd release papers pertaining to her 1976 bankruptcy. She said they "were just not available," adding she tried and failed to find them before her 2010 campaign. Funnily, J.C. Reindl, a reporter for New London's The Day, came up with the documents two weeks later, having found them in a National Archive office. McMahon quickly announced she would be repaying the creditors listed on them, even though the debts were discharged in 1982. Entities ranging from the IRS to Sears to a defunct Waterbury bank were owed nearly $1 million ($4 million in today's dollars) from the McMahons, who are now worth roughly $232 million.
