The International Festival of Arts & Ideas has named three of the featured acts in its 2013 slate. One had already been tipped by the Hartford Courant a few months back: The Handspring Puppet Company’s new version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which will have its world premiere in England in February and will have just two U.S. stops on the subsequent tour. Handspring is the group which brought The War Horse to Broadway. A Midsummer Night’s Dream plays at the Yale University Theatre June 15-23.
The two fresh announcements are:
• The U.S. premiere of “a new Kuchipudi solo” by classical South Indian dancer Shantala Shivalingappa, a multi-styled work which explores the Eastern dance traditions she’s mastered and reminisces about some of the Western artists she’s collaborated with. The performance is June 26-28 at New Haven’s Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School.
• A free concert on New Haven Green June 22 by the awesome avant-garde avatars Kronos Quartet, with special guest Chinese pipa artist Wu Man. Kronos Quartet is only the most influential “new classical” performance outfit around, having been around for four decades and having furthered the careers of some of the genre’s most inventive composers.
The rest of the Arts & Ideas sched will come a few months from now, in March. The festival dates this year are June 15-29. Details at www.artidea.org
