Letters: The Importance of Bicycling and Pedestrian Safety

Thank you for your article about Burnside Avenue's planned road diet in East Hartford. This is excellent news.

Will Laramie was my partner/mate. He was hit at 5:21 p.m. on a Thursday last September as he pedaled home from work. It wasn't dark. He wasn't on the wrong side of the road. He was just trying to get home after a long, hot day at his job.

Thanks for covering the story about this road and about the issue of bicycling and pedestrian safety in general. We just held a memorial benefit concert in Will's memory, which raised about $4000, half of which will go to Bike Walk Connecticut. (The other half will go to the East Hartford Public Schools to help provide private music lessons to deserving K-12 students. Will was a musician.) I met with MaryEllen Thibodeau and other BWC members a couple weeks ago and we talked about ways to get a safety curriculum into the school system. There are a lot of people in East Hartford who get around on two wheels or on foot.
