1st) WNHU 88.7 FM
“Rather than a college radio station, it’s a community radio station owned by a college,” says Bryan Lane, general manager at WNHU, the radio station at the University of New Haven. True, 88.7 FM offers programs developed around the niche interests of Greater New Haven that wouldn’t appear on for-profit stations. Bluegrass, hip-hop, polka, talk radio and all else can be heard on more than 70 scheduled programs each week. Program Director Kristen Bayusik and Station Manager Mia Becker believe their 414,000 listeners stay tuned because of the station's attention to diversity and not the university. Playing to those niche markets offers a connection to listeners, Bayusik and Becker agree, that goes beyond dorm room broadcasting. Program ideas come from community volunteers as well as supportive students and departments within UNH. A sundry staff regularly supplies new and hard-to-find music for listeners, and Bayusik does her best to squeeze in new shows whenever there is an open slot.
