occupation: art dealer and curator
found at: Chick Austin House (Hartford)
Clothing designers or brands you love wearing?
I am basically a one-designer shopper: Comme des Garcons. I’ve been collecting it for 20 years. The clothes are always interesting and beautifully made, and they last forever.
The most extravagant thing in your wardrobe?
A pair of silver-studded shoes by Christian Laboutin that are without a doubt the most expensive shoes I have ever owned — Hellraiser meets Liberace. I hate to admit it, but I actually paid retail and to make matters worse I bought them in two colors!
The inexpensive product you can't live without?
That’s easy: Carmex. Nobody likes dry lips!
Your favorite cocktail?
Single malt scotch on the rocks
What is it about owning a gallery you enjoy most?
Being surrounded by works of art that please the eye and feed the brain.
What type of artist attracts you?
One that pushes the expressive boundaries of his or her chosen medium and in the process expands my thinking about art and life in general.
What is it about collage art that you find so special?
Collagists are very much like poets in that they use images and objects that we know, or think we do, to construct meaning. I suppose what I love most about it is the poetry.
If you're in the kitchen, what are you cooking?
I’m probably boiling water for tea or making coffee. This is the extent to which I cook, although I’m very good at “things on plates.”
What do you absolutely have to have on-hand when having friends over?
Good wine and music. We keep it simple.
The character trait you find most attractive in others?
Your ultimate vacation spot?
Capri, for its physical beauty, incredible food and warm-hearted people. It is easily my favorite place on earth.
What do you listen to in the car?
I’m pretty eclectic. I usually flip between ’80s New Wave, acoustic music and vocal jazz, or I listen to NPR.
What are your most treasured possessions?
A box by Joseph Cornell that never ceases to fascinate me, and a carved torchere by Serge Roche that makes me smile every time I turn it on. I feel enormously privileged that I get to live with such things. I’m not sure we ever really possess beautiful works of art, though. We just take care of them until the next owner comes along.
What recent books have kept you reading into the night?
I love biographies. The ones I am juggling at the moment are about the painter Alice Neel and the singer/actress Kay Thompson.
What is your favorite pastime?
Shopping. I live for the hunt!
Who would you like to come back as?
Chick Austin, and I’m not just saying that because this is Hartford!
If you could have any guest at your table, who would you have over for dinner and what would you serve?
I have always wanted to meet Patti Smith. She is one of my heroes. I guess I would probably order Chinese.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I am a born worrier. I always admire people who can put their troubles on the backburner for a while. Unfortunately, I am not one of them!
