Goodspeed Musicals is producing a “new” show this fall by Stephen Schwartz, who did the songs for Wicked, Godspell, Pippin, Working and The Baker’s Wife.
Snapshots: A Musical Scrapbook, features songs from—hey!— Wicked, Godspell, Pippin, Working and The Baker’s Wife.
The songs will be reworked a bit to fit a new script by David Stern about “Sue and Dan, a couple whose 30 year marriage has begun to fall apart.” They are in the attic of their house, reminiscing, which leads to them bursting into song. Snapshots has a cast of six, and includes familiar Schwartz tunes such as “Popular,” “Corner of the Sun” and “Fathers and Sons,” but lesser-known numbers as well. The context of the songs will obviously change—they’ll be part of a relationship comedy rather than relating to Jesus Christ, The Wizard of Oz or a European prince from the Middle Ages—but some of the lyrics will apparently be altered as well. (That’s the kind of change that doesn’t always happen in this type of show, a musical theater subgenre whose exemplar is probably the Sondheim-based Marry Me a Little.)
Snapshots: A Musical Scrapbook has been developed elsewhere, notably at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre in 2011 and at TheatreWorks in Mountain View, California (no relation to the TheaterWorks in Hartford) in 2008, from which the photo illustrating this article was taken.
The Goodspeed’s producing Snapshots at its Norma Terris Theatre space in Chester, where the company routinely programs new or more intimate musicals. No specific dates, casting, director, designers or other key details of the production have been announced.
