The Long Wharf Theatre explores the life of jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong with the opening of Satchmo at the Waldorf, and the start of the theatre's 2012-13 season. The play, written by Terry Teachout after he completed his biography of Armstrong titled Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong, in order to further explore certain circumstances in his life. It centers on a night in March 1971 with Armstrong sitting backstage at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel's Empire Room, trying to get ready to play one last show. John Douglas Thompson stars in this one-man show.
