Curtain Call is celebrating the 70th anniversary of Oklahoma!'s Broadway debut with a run of the show at the Kweskin Theatre that opens this Friday. It's a play that was born at Richard Rodgers' Connecticut home and debuted at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, so the local connections are strong with this one. It was a key milestone in the development of the modern musical, an extension of what was first accomplished seriously with Show Boat — integrating songs into the play that developed and advanced the plot line. Generally speaking, it tells the tale of an old west love story that encounters many bumps in the road set against a backdrop of cowboys and Indians.
