Ingredients: Gin, Crème de Violette, Citrus
Price: $9

You’ll be forgiven for feeling like you may have slipped back in time and entered a speakeasy when you walk down the staircase and into the Tavern at Millwrights.  For one thing, there is a roaring fire in the corner.  For another, all the wait staff wears black suspenders over their black button downs, and the cocktails arrive in old fashioned glasses.  The menu doesn’t give you much information on the taste of the Aviation cocktail other than it’s a good fit if “you’re interested in looking sophisticated.”  And hopefully are interested in just such a thing, as it’s one of the more promising gin cocktails that you will find, just about anywhere.  The combination of the bitter gin and sweet, floral Crème de Violette is a pleasant pick-me-up for your taste buds.  The delicate violet flavor and brandied cherry make this drink a treat for the eyes as well as the palate.  As with all things at Millwright’s, the attentive and passionate foodie wait staff will be happy to tell you the history of the cocktail and help with a pairing from the Tavern’s upscale comfort food menu, or the main restaurant’s more sophisticated offerings.  Downstairs in the tavern, ask Chris the bartender for his advice on food and drink pairings.  Upstairs in the main restaurant, Maitre D’ and master sommelier Brent will be happy to guide you through a culinary feast that can be started or finished with an Aviation cocktail, depending on your mood and whimsy.
