Once an unfamiliar foreign delicacy, sushi has grown into a popular Japanese dish available just about anywhere you look. It can be simple, composed of fish, seaweed, rice and a vegetable, or full of bells and whistles. Either way, presentation is typically what differentiates one establishment's sushi creations from their competition. If you're looking to score some sushi and prefer the more elaborate configurations, take a visit to Tengda Asian Bistro and Hibachi in Milford.
I recently sampled both the fancy and the straightforward sushi from Tengda, and both are quite pleasing. The salmon avocado roll ($5.50), one of my personal favorites no matter where I get my sushi, had nice big hunks of salmon in the middle. The Honey Boston roll ($6.50) has shrimp, lettuce and tobiko inside, drizzled with a honey wasabi sauce that was more sweet than spicy. The Black Dragon roll ($14.95), with shrimp tempura and cucumber inside, topped with eel and avocado, had that nice tempura crunch. On the specials menu, the Dancing Roll ($15.95) was heaped with all sorts of stuff, including tuna, lobster salad and eel, with a sweet eel sauce to top it off.
But it was our appetizer, the Fire Cracker Shrimp ($9.95) that was the standout of the night. Little mini shrimps, slightly crunchy, come slathered in a creamy and ever-so-slightly spicy sauce, served in a tortilla bowl. There was more than enough to split with my boyfriend, who also found the dish to be surprisingly yummy.
If sushi isn't your bag, Tengda has Japanese, Chinese and Southeast Asian menus to pick through, a wide selection of noodles and fried rice, and, if you like a show with your dinner, a bunch of hibachi tables. There is also a shiny bar a bit separated from the restaurant if you just want to get your drink on.
