Summer is coming. I mean, we think it's at least on its way. Spring has gotten hot enough to fake us out a couple times, but it's June and we're still seeing 40s on our thermometers, so no one's fooling us. But, as is typical in New England, we could end up melting for weeks straight any day now. Have you found your favorite chilly beverage to cool down with this season? One you may have overlooked, the simple vanilla milkshake, is celebrated nationally on June 20, apparently. And we were alerted to the holiday by McDonald's, of all places.
McDonald's vanilla shake, while I won't risk a look at the ingredients list, isn't not tasty. The chain has recently fancified the look of its coffee and non-soda drinks, and the shakes are now served in clear plastic McCafe cups instead of the waxy paper cups that used to add that pleasent "Your shake's almost over" taste we all loved so much. With a whipped cream crown and a cherry on top, it's passable as a quick, grab-and-go option if you've got a craving and you're short on time.
Once we heard vanilla milkshakes had their own holiday, we made a beeline for Clark's Family Restaurant (68 Whitney Ave., New Haven, 203-776-8465, clarksnewhaven.com) to celebrate a little early. Clark's milkshakes are made to order, and you can choose any of their numerous ice cream flavors as a base. I opted to try a chocolate milkshake as well, as I do have my preferences. National Chocolate Milkshake Day isn't until Sept. 12, though. A Clark's milkshake could easily be shared by two, but it's possible to tackle one solo. Thick, creamy, and with lumps of ice cream chilling throughout, a real milkshake from a place like Clark's is much more worth your time and money than its cheap drive-thru cousin.
