If you thought you knew large pretzels, then get a load of the Uber-Pretzel, known for being one of the largest of its kind. This jumbo treat is made of 8.5 ounces of dough. When baked to completion, the inch-thick Uber-Pretzel measures a whopping 7.5 inches by 10.5 inches. That's almost the size of an iPad! In honor of Oktoberfest, through Oct. 13 Pretzelmaker has unleashed its creation to all of its stores nationwide.
But why pretzels? Well, pretzels are actually quite popular in Germany because they pair well with beer. Southern Germany's own version of the festival, called Bretzel, usually hosts many "Brotfrauen," or bread ladies, who carry pretzels in huge baskets.
So, hurry and celebrate Oktoberfest like it's meant to by double-fisting, with a beer in one hand and a giant pretzel in the other! Here are a few places to visit:
Pretzel Buns at Corey's Catsup and Mustard, 623 Main St., Manchester, (860) 432-7755, catsupandmustard.com. Corey's gives people the chance to substitute a warm pretzel bun to any of their options from the "My Burger Heaven" portion of their menu for only 50 cents.
Pretzel Burger at Plan B, 138 Park Road, West Hartford, (860) 231-1199; and 4 Railroad St., Simsbury, (860) 658-4477, planbburger.com. Plan B has their own specialty burger with spicy mustard, lettuce, pickles, cheddar... and a pretzel bun all for $11.49.
Pretzel Salmon at City Steam Brewery, 942 Main St., Hartford, (860) 525-1600, citysteambrewerycafe.com. Enjoy a Salmon baked with a pretzel crust slathered in mustard cream and balsamic drizzle. People have the choice to order either a large portion for $19 or a smaller dish for $14.
Giant Bavarian Pretzel at East Side, 131 Dwight Street New Britain, (860) 233-1188, eastsiderestaurant.com. From their Munich Menu, people can order the Giant Bavarian Pretzel as an appetizer. The pretzel is imported from Germany and is served with a zen mustard.
Wetzel's Pretzels at Buckland Hills Mall, 194 Buckland Hills Drive #2220, Manchester, (860) 648-2199, wetzels.com. On the lower level of the mall, Wetzel's Pretzels sells a few varieties of pretzels including the hand-rolled Wetzel's Original with or without butter and Cin-A-Yum, a treat covered in cinnamon butter and a sweet glaze. Choose from baked cheese pretzels like the Jalaroni, a pretzel topped with pepperoni and jalapeno peppers and stuffed with cheese, Wetzel Dogs, which are basically hot dogs wrapped in pretzels, and the Wetzel Blitz, which offers bite-sized pretzels with either butter and salt or cinnamon and sugar.
