Flavor Profile: Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in West Hartford
Connecticut pizza is taking over. It's not Pizza Hut, or Domino's, or Papa John's, praise be to God. It's Pepe's. Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, to be exact. And a new outpost of this CT pizza juggernaut opened in West Hartford last week. (Pepe's also has spots in New Haven, Fairfield, Manchester, Mohegan Sun and Danbury.) Before the official grand opening, there was a free-pizza day, which goes a long way toward priming the local appetites for New Haven-style thin-crust action, in case anyone needed a reason to get excited. Well — whether it was the free slices or the promise of more world-class pizza in a town that already has its share of pretty damn good pie — word is out. The new Pepe's was humming with action last week. There was a steady, but not overlong, wait for tables during lunch at the restaurant, which has around 18 or so tables and booths. And the pizza, with those signature charred and blistered crusts, was top-tier, as advertised.
