Ten Genre Films That Deserve Awards
The 2011 movie awards season has finally begun, and as usual, most of the nominees are stuffy¿yet mostly well made¿dramas. Yet if you look at Rotten Tomatoes, Brad Bird's new "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" has an impressive 95% positive rating. So why isn't this on any of the lists? Year-in and year-out groups like the Hollywood Foreign Press and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ignore movies that fit readily into popular categories, like those of the superhero, science fiction, or children's genres. Here's a list of ten film over the past eleven years that merit greater recognition.

Star Trek (2009).
J. J. Abrams more or less accomplished the impossible by crafting a Star Trek reboot that not only appealed to new audiences, but also pleased fans of the original series. This film was edged out by the more politically aware but comparatively dull "District 9" in the Best Picture race.
