2012: My Year in Connecticut Music
By far, the best part of my job is the hour-or-so a week I spend talking to musicians. I spoke to a number of artists with Connecticut ties in 2012 -- hip-hop artists, jazz musicians, composers, indie rockers, metalheads -- and every one of them said something memorable. Here's a snapshot of how I spent my year. Thanks to everyone who answered the phone. -- Michael Hamad

Jessica Pavone and Mary Halvorson Quote: "We are both improvisers... As we progress, there are pieces that don't incorporate improvisation, but I have an improvisational language with her that I don't have with anyone else. Both of those elements [composition and improvisation] are in our music and sometimes one is given more weight than the other... I'm usually the one who writes without improvisation. That's just my aesthetic... I like to know where things are, although I wouldn't say that I'm a control freak." -- Jessica Pavone |
