There aren't too many jazz pianists right now with greater name recognition than West Hartford native Brad Mehldau, who'll perform an intimate solo show at Asylum Hill Congregational Church on Oct. 4. Over the years, much of Meldhau's focus has been on the trio format (he has released five recordings under the heading The Art of the Trio). But he's no stranger to solo performance. A remarkably innovative improviser, the pianist also keeps an eye on contemporary popular music; don't be surprised if you hear a Radiohead song (he's been knowon to cover their "Knives Out" from the Amnesiac album) linked up with one of his own tunes. There's a sense of playfulness and humor in his playing as well (check out his piano concerto, The Brady Bunch Variations for Piano and Orchestra, which debuted in Paris in 2007). Here's a chance to check out a brilliant musician in a great-sounding venue, right here in Hartford, for a good cause (all proceeds support the Asylum Hill Boys and Girls Club).
Oct. 4, 7:30 p.m., $25, Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Ave., Hartford, (860) 525-5696, ahcc.org.
