Ensemble Sinawi Performs at University of Hartford on Thursday
Most cultures have developed an improvisational, mystical musical tradition or two, and Korea is no exception. Head to Hillyer Hall on Thursday evening for the Ensemble Sinawi (pictured), an internationally renowned group of Korean musicians who'll take you somewhere — spiritually and intellectually — you probably didn't think you'd visit. Sinawi music once accompanied actual shamanistic rites (performed by a mudang, or female shaman), and the word "sinawi" itself means musical improvisation based on certain set devices, as you'd find in, say, South Indian music or American jazz. The concert is free.
