Hartford's Roots Music Hall, a new-ish club that's been booking some great talent, features a showdown between two homespun musical traditions — skiffle, a British folk style that captured everyone's attention in the late '50s, and its American counterpart, jugband music — that have a lot in common. (The Beatles started out as a skiffle group, and the Grateful Dead was first a jugband called Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions). The showdown features skiffle dude Hilton Valentine (pictured above in earlier, electrified days) versus Washboard Slim and the Bluelights.
