Best Singer-Songwriter: Becky Kessler
Becky Kessler's sound is moody and low, electric, resonant, and influenced by a combination of folks like Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith, Morphine, Chris Whitley, Tom Waits and Nina Simone. She's been in the process of recording her first album, with Floyd Kellogg from You Scream I Scream and casa de Warrenton Studio and has more than enough material to choose from. When it comes to the writing process, Kessler tends to begin with the chords. "The process is different with each song, but I would say that the music part comes first," she says. "Lyrics come next and some tunes never quite make it that far, because for me, that part takes more time and by then I've moved on to other tunes." Ultimately she'd like to become a rock star, but she'll settle for making a living off of music and slowly honing her craft and expanding her opportunities and experiences. As for other local acts, she's into her producer's band You Scream I Scream, and also Heirlooms and the Proud Flesh. "I haven't heard enough local stuff," she says. "I moved here almost two years ago and I live way out in the country. I just checked out Hannah Fair... I think she's awesome."
