I Break Horses, 'Hearts' (May 8, 2012) |
Hearts opens with a blooming synthesizer arpeggiation that swells, gets doubled and built upon. It's church-like, sexy and narcotized (all at the same time), with cracking drum programming and whispered or cooed vocal parts. My Bloody Valentine released their influential record Loveless a little over 20 years ago, and there was stretch where it seemed like the influence of the band's signature woozy rushes of sound, tremolo-heavy guitars, and hushed reverb-saturated singing had vanished. But MBV are the clear sonic reference on the new record by Swedish duo I Break Horses. There's also a touch of the dreamy and inscrutable pop pleasure of the Cocteau Twins. I Break Horses is perhaps a little more clubby than either of those two older bands, with crisp beats making the music seem like dance jams made for a party on a billowy cloud somewhere.
