If you haven’t yet seen local filmmaker Stephen Dest’s mystery thriller My Brother Jack, which had a grand premiere at the Criterion Cinema in New Haven a couple of months ago, it’s screening again Thursday March 28 at a highly appropriate locale, Best Video (1842 Whitney Ave Hamden;
(203) 287-9286, www.bestvideo.com)
The gritty psychological drama about brothers who have trouble connect[uing after the death of a family member was filmed in and around New Haven, and is as enjoyable for its use of familiar bars, streets and other sidewalks as it is for its provocative plot.
The film has vetured out into the international film festival circuit and is not yet available on DVD, so screenings in our area are rare and should be appreciated.
Best Video usually books live music acts on Thursday nights these days, letting the bands choose the videos they’d like to have projected silently behind them as they play. My Brother Jack is a show unto itself, but a local musician is represented. Jonny Rodgers, of teen Mighty Purple and mature tuned-wineglass-neoclassical-pop fame provided the musical soundtrack for the film.
