Yelp Helps (Nick Caito photo / August 27, 2012) |
On Thursday, August 26th, as the shadows fell and dusk settled onto Pratt St, hundreds of black and red clad do-gooders arrived at the Society Room to explore and enjoy Yelp's first ever charity fundraiser and showcase for local non-profits. They were onsite with information, smiling volunteers, and sign-up sheets for those interested in volunteering. The long list of participators included: Real Art Ways, Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective, Foodshare, the Sadie Mae Foundation, and the Connecticut Forum. In between learning about all the amazing community and arts based initiatives Hartford has to offer, guests noshed on a taco bar courtesy of the Society Room's catering team, delectable hors d'oeuvres from Jordan Caterers, and citrus cured salmon from Dish. NoRa of Middletown offered mini versions of their chocolate malt ball and lemon lavender cupcakes for dessert. Olde Burnside Brewing handed out samples of their local microbrews, and there were also several cocktails in circulation, including a fabulous chocolate mojito, also courtesy of the Society Room's catering team. Lulu wines provided both red and white vinos, and Peel Liqueur was also present with their innovative mixologists. All food and beverages were generously donated by the local businesses, in order to ensure that the donations taken at the door -- $1200 in total -- went directly to the partner charity of the evening: Hands on Hartford. Yelp Hartford Community Manager, Emily Cahill, truly did an amazing job mustering and organizing the non-profits and restaurants alike, to the vast enjoyment of all the local foodies, online reviewers, and community participants. Those interested in future events can sign up for a free Yelp account, and follow Yelp's local goings-on via Facebook and Twitter.
