Journalist Bernard Kalb speaks at the Westport Public Library on Feb. 6

It took a trusted journalist to be invited to accompany Richard Nixon on a trip to Communist China in 1972. Bernard Kalb, who covered international relations for CBS News, NBC News and The New York Times met the criteria. On Monday, he'll be at the Westport Library to speak about his historic week in China, a visit that helped thaw hostility between the U.S. and China and also opened doors for renewed relations with the Soviet Union and North Vietnam. Kalb was later appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs in 1984, but quit the post to protest what he considered a campaign of misinformation about Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi by the Reagan Administration. (We wonder what his take on Gaddafi's death last year might be.)
