Westport Celebrates The Great Gatsby This Month
Every January the weather gets crappy, the post-holiday laziness set in and the town of Westport collectively settles into a cozy seat with a good book. This year, the selection is The Great Gatsby, and there are a whole bunch of events scheduled around town related to the book, including a talk by Staples High School English teacher Dr. Gerry Kuroghlian at the house on South Compo Road where author Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald lived in 1920. This week kicks off the festivities with a Flapper Headband Workshop for teens (Westport Library, Sat., Jan. 5, 2 p.m.), a talk by Yale's Dean Mark Schenker on what the book tells us about our nation, our history and ourselves (Westport Library, Sun., Jan. 6, 2 p.m. and a reading of the first two chapters by local celebrities including sportswriter Frank Deford and First Selectman Gordon Joseloff.
