No, The Motherf----r with the Hat is not an angry, vulgar version of Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat, but rather a presentation of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ play about a former drug dealer fresh out the pen, ready to face the American workforce. Unfortunately, when he gets home, he finds some other guy’s hat lying around his apartment, which leads him to accuse his wife of cheating. Called “[o]ne of the best new plays in ages” by The New Yorker, this comedy originally starred Chris Rock (pictured) as the protagonist’s parole counselor, Ralph D. Hartford’s Theatre Works hosts the first off-Broadway production of the play (sans Rock).
