Mandrake Mechanism's Rook (aka Matt Telford, pictured right) slipped me a tin-foil-wrapped copy of their new EP, Monetary Artforms, sometime during the second Saturday of Grand Band Slam last month. I think it was at Up or On the Rocks or Arch Street Tavern. Details are hazy.
Anyway: the next day, I made a headpiece out of the tin foil, following the informational diagram on the CD sleeve. It's a safe way to listen to the proggy-hip-hop Monetary Artforms. I've been listening ever since.
If you're free this Saturday, you have two chances to see Mandrake Mechanism in Hartford. They'll be at Sully's Pub (2071 Park St.) opening for Brooklyn, N.Y.'s Boogie Rock Boys at 9 p.m. (You'll need $7 to get in.)
If you miss that, head to the aforementioned Up or On the Rocks (50 Union Place), where Mandrake Mechanism will join Shag Frenzy's DJ Christian Cajar (pictured left) and his Halloween festivities. (It'll run you another $5.) Bring tin foil.
You Scream I Scream's Floyd Kellogg, with whom I got a chance to talk on the phone the other day (article coming soon), will play guitar at both gigs. (Kellogg produced Monetary Artforms at Casa de Warrenton Studios. Listen here.)
Here's a clip of Mandrake Mechanism playing Arch Street Tavern over the summer. So you know what you're in for.
