1) Action Sports
Paul von Maffei, owner of Action Sports, is philosophical about this past, essentially snow-free, winter. On the one hand, it was plainly disastrous for the ski industry nationwide, but, on the other hand, an early spring only meant that bikers hit the roads and paths early. So, if it's not ski season, let it be bike season. And even with a warm winter, There's always the wonders of technology. "Thank god for snow making," says von Maffei. And technology has improved the skiing equipment as well, making the sport safer than it's ever been. "You're probably more likely to get hurt in a parking lot getting out of your car and slipping than you are skiing," he says. On the biking side of things, Action Sports is also a Giant branded store, which von Maffei describes as "like the Gucci store for bicycles." Beyond the boutique branding, von Maffei says simply having a staff of knowledgeable fellow sporting types means a better experience for customers. "I think the biggest thing that we offer is that we participate in all those sports. The people who are selling the merchandise are also very enthusiastic about what they do," he says. "We deal one on one with our customers. All the stuff we sell almost requires that."
