Bubble and Squeak

Bubble and Squeak: Stewart Hutchings. (May 4, 2012)

1) Bubble & Squeak

Did you know that Bubble and Squeak was one of the titles that the Beatles considered and then (perhaps wisely) rejected when they were trying to come up with a name for what would become Revolver? It has little to do with laundromats, except for that it's also the name that Stewart Hutchings (also a Brit) came up with for his. (The name comes from a popular English dish of leftovers.) Hutchings says it's superior technology and bargain rates that explain the success of his 25-year-old business. "It's the same old story," says Hutchings. "I offer good value for the money. My machines are the best possible. They wash the best and they dry the best." It might sound simple, but there's a little more to it. Hutchings got the idea for the business on a return trip to Great Britain a quarter century ago when his cousin did his laundry; Hutchings was struck by the contrast with the level of cleaning compared to what he viewed as an inferior wash that was typical in the U.S. Part of the secret to that crisp Anglo cleaning was in the machines. "I built a laundromat with high-performing Swedish front-load washing machines," he says. "Front loaders are the way to go." About half of Bubble and Squeaks' business is drop-off service, where they wash, dry and fold. Few things impart that feeling of calm, order and belonging like fresh, clean laundry. And having someone else do it for you might be a kind of adult peak experience. "It's like having a professional mother there," says Hutchings.
