Knit New Haven: June Sachs, Julia Bogardus and Linda Reis. (May 3, 2012) |
1) Knit New Haven
Look for the shop with the knit-bombed door handle: that's where you'll find June Sachs, Julia Bogardus and Linda Reis, the three witty, knitting ladies behind Knit New Haven. The cozy shop feels like home, "but with yarn," quips Sachs. "At lunchtime, we have people sitting around, and we do a stitch-and-bitch on Tuesday nights. It's a group that meets all over the country, and we just host it here." Don't assume the demographic is skewed toward an older crowd; the owners say they get everyone from high school students to grannies, men too. "Being in New Haven, we have access to college students who have a new, fresh energy," says Bogardus. "There are undergraduate knitting groups, knitters from the nursing school, the architecture school... It's a very dynamic community."
