1) Ballou's Wine Bar
When customers find a place that serves handmade truffles, chances are they'll lock it into their GPS. Ballou's Restaurant and Wine Bar, owned by the dynamic husband-and-wife team Steven and Debbie Kaye since 2009, offers 12 different varieties of truffles, decadent chocolate fondues and more. "Chocolate, wine and coffee was the original concept," says Steven. "Deb developed the recipe for the fondue, and more importantly the truffles. We go through close to 25,000 a year, and that's being conservative." Fondue dwellers dip slices of pound cake, strawberries, rice krispies treats and other tidbits into traditional chocolate, caliente (with cinnamon and cayenne pepper), Nutella, peanut butter and peanut butter and chocolate fondues. "We also do a variety of desserts," Steven says, "including Kahlua cake, mudslide brownies, chocolate cakes, assorted pies, cheesecake. We sell huge amounts of desserts."
