Mezcal: V. Hugo Galezai and Ricardo Trejo. (April 30, 2012) |
1) Mezcal Restaurante Mexicana y Cantina
It's a two-year-in-a-row win for Richard Trejo and Hugo Jalisco of Mezcal. The two have been running their Mechanic Street Mexican eatery for six years and base their cuisine on classic Mexican drinks and dishes. Mezcal eschews tired quesadillas in favor of flavorful enchiladas de Cammaron, Tostas Totinga and Mamarudey (a family dish made of chicken, tomatillo, raisin, garlic and chipotle). They named their endeavor after mezcal, a cousin of tequila, that is more popular in their motherland than tequila. In addition to six different brands of mezcal, they have over 30 brands of tequila - most of them in three varieties: blanco, reposado and anejo. What can they do with so many kinds of tequila? Make you the margarita of your dreams. Their secret? Freshly squeezed lime juice. If you're in the mood to try something more adventurous - or more potent - try the michelada, a beer cocktail made with lime and chili pepper, or a chi kumquat, a michelada pumped full of tequila and grenadine - ouch!
