1) Comerio Restaurant
Park Street restaurant Comerio is much an institution in the Hartford Puerto Rican community. They’ve been at it for going on 37 years, and folks around town know that the little eatery is the place to go for delicious roast pork and potato fritters stuffed with ground meat. But owner/manager Luis Rodriguez encourages out-of-towners coming into Hartford for a play or a concert to come see what the excitement’s about. “We’re here,” he says. In addition to the staples of beans and rice -- which most people can turn out a decent version of at home -- Comerio also offers up more elaborate specialties, like mofongo (a mix of mashed plantains and garlic), blood sausage and pasteles (Puerto Rican tamales made with plantains instead of corn), many of which are associated with holiday feasts. You can get them any time at Comerio.
