Doula Joni Stone, this year’s winner for Best Midwife, attends roughly 50 births a year. The North American Registry of Midwifes-certified doula has an office in New Haven, but mostly Stone is a home birth midwife, and she’s seen a recent uptick in at-home births. “The majority of my clientele are well-educated, women and families in their late 20s, 30s, even 40s, some of whom have had previous birth experiences that they found were traumatic,” Stone said. “They really want to find a different path.” A great deal of what Stone does is education: risks, benefits, pros and cons. “They are active participants in the process,” Stone said. “The biggest trend is a lot of first-time moms who are doing the research beforehand, who don’t want a great deal of intervention.”
