Hartford Hospital cares for the area’s sickest patients and provides some of the best care around. “We try to provide comfort and conversation and unbelievable nursing care,” said A.J. Smally, medical director of the emergency department. In the last two years, they’ve installed 26 new beds in the emergency department, 20 new ICU and critical-care step-down beds, a simulation and robotics center and several other noteworthy, innovative developments, including a new “patient experience” initiative. “It's an ongoing labor of love,” said Fred Tilden, associate director of the emergency department. “We are proud to say that the patient experience now matches the technology and skill of the staff.”
