Simply enduring the horrific murders of his wife and daughters demonstrated a heroism that the rest of us can’t even imagine. For anyone who opened a newspaper or turned on a TV in Connecticut in the past four years, seeing William Petit have to relive the tragedy of the Cheshire home-invasion murders in court and in the media caused a kind of sympathetic anguish for many. Dr. Petit’s suffering was almost impossible to watch and to consider. But his dignity is a fitting tribute to the victims.
