"“Foodshare is the regional food bank, and we provide food to local community kitchens, emergency shelters and food pantries,” says Foodshare President and CEO Gloria McAdam. “We do that primarily by working with food companies and asking them to donate food.” In the last two years demand at local food pantries has gone up by 30 percent, and it’s clearly affected by the economy, says McAdam. That means that people who are struggling to make mortgage payments and to pay bills sometimes try to save money by not eating enough. “The grocery bill is one that people try to squeeze,” she says. Meanwhile, there’s a lot of food that would go to waste, and a lot of families that would go hungry if it weren’t for the efforts of Foodshare, which serves Hartford and Tolland counties. “With just a $30 donation we can feed someone for an entire month,” says McAdam."
