1) Union Street Tavern
The crew behind Union Street Tavern in Windsor went all out when they put together the pieces for their American-style bar and grill back in 2006. Housed on the site of an old 1927 firehouse, the space breathes warmth and history. The bar itself was built in 1929, and was once part of a venerable spot in Hartford’s South End. It fits in nicely at its new home. But that’s all just icing, and it wouldn’t mean much if the beer and the food weren’t first-rate and the atmosphere didn’t make you want to linger a while. A recently expanded beer menu pretty much cements the deal. And the fact that each September the tavern sponsors a 3.5 charity race that starts and ends at the bar, with free beer and food for participants and proceeds donated to a cause ($20,000 raised last year) is all the more reason to love the place.
