1) La Paloma Sabanera
It helps to have righteous coffee to fuel self expression. Some might say it’s essential. That could help explain the success of the wonderfully free-form open mic nights at La Paloma Sabanera, Hartford’s caffeine hot spot. “It’s anything goes – you can do music, if you want to do spoken work, we’ve had people do comedy,” says owner Virginia Iacobucci. “The only thing we haven’t had is interpretive dance.” The January event was packed. And maybe the fact that they only do it once every other month means that all the talent stores up its creative energy until it’s at a bursting point. Keep ‘em wanting more is the show biz mantra. “We like to call ourselves Hartford’s living room,” says Iacobucci. “It’s a place where people feel at home and relaxed. It’s very welcoming.”
