Changing from a for-profit gallery to a non-profit arts center demonstrates a certain degree of commitment. For City Lights executive director Susan Kachmar, the decision was easy: “In a struggling economy and in a city like Bridgeport, we decided we could serve our community better as a non-profit. My personal approach is to connect art with service.” City Lights is a small organization, but “the fact that it's small means we're focused on our mission,” says Kachmar. It also means that City Lights' employees wear many hats (Kachmar is also the Programs Director) — and that the center goes beyond the visual arts in its programming. City Lights sometimes even goes beyond the gallery walls, too. The organization has hosted events on Bridgeport's McLevy Green, and recently transformed an unused classroom in the Roosevelt School into a gallery space.
