1) Black Rock Laundromat
This is the fourth time Blackrock Laundromat and Dry Cleaners, in Bridgeport, has won Best Laundromat, and owner and operator Jim Kaklamanos wants to thank his faithful customers. The loyal already know that, with 22 years at this location, Blackrock has a lot with plenty of parking, and also provides a drop-off service (leave your clothes, have them washed, dried and folded, for same or next-day pickup), as well as pickup and delivery of laundry, and is open 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., always with an attendant on the premises. But the loyal customers also know that Jim and his wife Joanne are dedicated to creating a neighborhood laundromat, where kids can amuse themselves drawing on the store's chalkboards and even get help with their homework, on the premises. While out and about, Jim gives out his cellphone number to stay in contact with the customers and staff. And people appreciate that. The place is a neighborhood fixture, where Denise Montanez, Jim's assistant for 18 years, is always smiling because, she says, she has the world's best boss. The recent remodeling for 2011 has increased the number of washers to 45 and has added more dryers, including 80 lb. machines for cleaning rugs (good to know) and taking on big laundry jobs. The laundromat is now new and improved, 500 square feet bigger, with better security cameras and more TVs to entertain customers, along with the free coffee and tea. No one, we suspect, really likes to do laundry, so why not wash your clothes where you can have many comforts of home and get to know the folks? Why not take your clothes to Blackrock Laundromat?215 Fairfield Ave.
