Crumbs: Jason and Mia Bauer. (May 14, 2012) |
1) Crumbs Bake Shop
Talk about timing! In 2003, Mia and Jason Bauer opened the first Crumbs Bake Shop on the Upper West Side. A few years later, cupcakes became an item of foodie interest for the first time, and Crumbs had a full selection of artisan varieties, from key lime pie to s'mores to caramel apple. Basically, any dessert food can be mashed into a cupcake, as Crumbs has proven. The shop also originated the Colossal Cupcake, a whopping six-inch-tall variety. (Why not just order a cake? Because cupcakes are always more awesome!) In less than a decade, Crumbs has expanded to about three dozen stores stretching all the way to Los Angeles. Westport, where Martha Stewart launched her frilly empire, was one of the earliest sites of a Crumbs franchise, and the shop has become a neighborhood favorite, cemented to last long after foodie trends shift to another unlikely dish, like the cruller or fig roll.
