What was the hardest thing to learn about bartending?
The hardest was dealing with different energies and emotions of people who come in. I have learned to keep a good vibe and good atmosphere. That, I think, is most important.
What's been the drinking fad/trend of the summer?
A lot of white wine spritzers, sangrias, a lot of juices. People were looking to be refreshed this summer because it was so hot. It's gonna sound weird ’cause we're in downtown, but it's been an easy, breezy summer. We do a lot of events with the Pump House, plus we have a jazz night and a Latin night.
What is sutra and how does it relate to the bar?
It comes from Kama Sutra. There is a sexual but classy attitude here. People come in dressed very nicely. This is a social environment, culturally diverse and people leave the drama at the door.
What's the bar scene like in downtown Hartford?
It varies. You have your pubs, your happy hour spots and your lounges. Bartending for me downtown has been great networking. I have met a lot of artists, professionals and musicians. I have found some places can be a little busy, Sutra Lounge is more like a getaway.
