An Exhibit of Native American Pottery at Bellarmine Museum of Art
Native inhabitants of the American Southwest have been honing their pottery-making skills for centuries. The current exhibit at Fairfield U's Bellarmine Museum of Art features over three dozen potted vessels from Pueblos around New Mexico that demonstrate their makers' expertise, formal values and cultural histories. It's called Fire and Earth: Native American Pottery from New Mexican Pueblos, and some of the 20th century artisans whose works are featured include Julian Martinez, Helen Naha and Robert Tenoria. On Wednesday, Dr. Bruce Bernstein, an independent curator and Native American pottery expert, will give a free talk about the creation process of Pueblo pottery.
